Masik Shivaratri is a monthly observance devoted to Lord Shiva, observed on the 14th night of each lunar month in many Shaiva traditions. A popular legend links Shivaratri to the night Shiva and Parvati were married, and devotees fast and keep vigil to seek blessings and spiritual merit.
Many devotees fast or keep a light vrat, perform a midnight lingam abhishekam with milk and water, offer bilva leaves and fruits, and chant Om Namah Shivaya (or Mahamrityunjaya Mantra) during the puja.
Regional Panchangs can assign the tithi and nakshatra on different days in January 2026, so observance dates may vary by region; the muhurat then fixes the exact start time of fasting and puja.
