French colonial administrator and politician who served as Governor-General of French Indochina from 1945 until 1947.
Fernand Carcassonne was born in Bouc-Bel-Air, France, on June 5, 1901.
He attended the École Nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer and the École Supérieure de Guerre.
After graduating from the École Nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer, Carcassonne served in various colonial posts in Africa and Indochina.
In 1945, he was appointed Governor-General of French Indochina.
As Governor-General, Carcassonne oversaw the return of French rule to Indochina after World War II.
He also played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Geneva Accords of 1954, which ended the First Indochina War.
After leaving Indochina, Carcassonne served as the French Ambassador to Afghanistan.
He died in Paris on July 14, 1968.
Carcassonne is remembered as a firm but fair administrator who was dedicated to the welfare of the people of Indochina.
