Filipe Paoluzzi, influential Paris dealer, dies aged 80

Filipe Paoluzzi, the influential Paris art dealer who played a key role in the promotion of contemporary and modern art, has died at the age of 80.

Paoluzzi was born in Paris on December 12, 1942, and began his career in the art world in the 1960s as a gallery assistant at the Galerie Daniel Templon. He later founded his own gallery, Galerie Filippault, which he operated from 1975 to 1989.

As a gallerist, Paoluzzi was known for his discerning eye and his ability to spot emerging talent. He was an early supporter of artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Francesco Clemente and helped to introduce their work to a wider audience.

In 1989, Paoluzzi closed Galerie Filippault and became a private dealer. He continued to work with both established and emerging artists, and was instrumental in the development of the careers of many of them.

Paoluzzi died in Paris on March 7, 2023. He is survived by his wife, Ghislaine, and their two children.

In addition to his career as a dealer, Paoluzzi was also an active participant in the art world. He served on the board of directors of the FIAC art fair, founded the art foundation l'Atelier Nour, and organized numerous exhibitions.
