American historian of international relations whose 14 published books include analyses of American involvement in World War I and the causes of the Fall of France during World War II. His 1997 book The Kennedy Tapes: Inside the White House During the Cuban Missile Crisis became the primary sources of the 2000 film Thirteen Days starring Kevin Costner that viewed the Missile Crisis from the perspective of American political leaders. He served on the 9/11 commission and highlighted the failures of the government intelligence agencies. May taught full-time on the faculty of Harvard University for 55 years, until his death. May was also a recipient of the 1988 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order, co-authored with Richard Neustadt. May Ernest was born on November 19, 1928 in Fort Worth, Texas. Ernest was an American actress and singer. She is best known for her role as Helen Martin on the CBS sitcom The Danny Thomas Show.
Ernest began her career as a singer in the 1940s. She performed with several big bands, including those led by Charlie Barnet and Woody Herman. In the early 1950s, she began appearing on television, and in 1953 she landed the role of Helen Martin on The Danny Thomas Show. She played the role for nine seasons, until the show ended in 1964.
After The Danny Thomas Show ended, Ernest continued to appear on television and in films. She guest-starred on several popular shows, including The Love Boat, Murder, She Wrote, and Diagnosis: Murder. She also appeared in several films, including The Odd Couple (1968) and The Out-of-Towners (1970).
Ernest died on August 1, 2009 at the age of 80.
