French engineer who had the idea of applying Bayesian calculations to maximize his chances of winning races by spreading risk just as he had done in his work in portfolio management. He was used to such calculations, as a specialist in estimating risks for insurance companies. On 12 November 1958, he won the trifecta 35 times, winning 5 million francs. Unfortunately his system required a set amount of money higher than that authorized for a single punter. Known as "Mr. X" in newspaper reports, he committed suicide, dying at 9:30am on 17 October 1975 in Saint-Cloud. Link to Wikipedia biography (French) Read less

In Vedic astrology, the natal lagna, or ascendant, signifies the starting point of an individual's horoscope and has a profound influence on their personality and life path. When the natal lagna is in Gemini, the individual is likely to exhibit traits associated with this air sign. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and it is characterized by intelligence, adaptability, and communication skills. People with Gemini ascendant are often curious, sociable, and versatile, with a strong desire for knowledge and a tendency to multitask. The presence of the Punarvasu nakshatra in the ascendant further refines these qualities. Punarvasu is ruled by Jupiter, and it is associated with renewal and return to one's true nature. Individuals with Punarvasu in their lagna tend to be optimistic, nurturing, and generous. They possess a philosophical outlook and have a strong sense of ethics and morality. In this scenario, the lagna lord Mercury is placed in the 2nd house in Cancer, which affects the individual's financial prospects, speech, and family life. The 2nd house is associated with wealth, possessions, and values. Mercury in Cancer brings emotional intelligence into communication and thought processes, often making the person empathetic and intuitive in their dealings. They might be skilled at managing finances and have a strong connection to their family. Moreover, Mercury being in Ashlesha nakshatra, which is ruled by Mercury itself, intensifies the intellectual and communicative abilities. Ashlesha is linked to transformation and resourcefulness. Individuals with this placement may have a persuasive way of speaking and the ability to influence others. They may also have a deep understanding of human nature and psychology, which can aid them in various fields, such as counseling or negotiation. Overall, this combination suggests an individual who is intellectually inclined, communicative, and emotionally intelligent, with a strong ethical sense and the ability to navigate complex social and financial situations effectively. Their adaptability and persuasive skills can lead to success in fields requiring negotiation, communication, or interpersonal relations.
