American ecclesiastic, Roman Catholic archbishop who was Cardinal Bernardins successor in Cincinnati when Bernardin moved to Chicago in 1982. He was educated at Saint Gregory Seminary in Cincinnati 1948-53, and in Rome at the Vatican 1955-61, earning his M.A. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1969.
