Platzeck began his political career as a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) in 1971. After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He served as the leader of the SPD in Brandenburg from 2000 to 2013.
Platzeck was elected Minister-President of Brandenburg in 2002. He served in this position until 2013, when he resigned due to health problems.
