### Schwan, Gesine
_Schwan, Gesine (Gesine Schwan; born May 22, 1943 in Berlin) is a German political scientist, politician, and President of the Viadrina European University in Frankfurt (Oder)_
#### Biography
_Schwan studied philosophy, psychology, political science, and public administration at the FU Berlin and the LSE until 1969 and received her doctorate in political science from the FU Berlin in 1972.
She was a research assistant at the FU Berlin and from 1978 to 1984 head of the research project "Women's Political Participation in the Federal Republic of Germany" at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung.
Furthermore, she was a member of the "Commission on Higher Education for Women" of the German UNESCO Commission and the "Commission on the Future of the University" of the Wissenschaftsrat._
#### Career
_From 1985 to 2009 Schwan was Professor of Political Science at the Free University of Berlin, where she established the "Center for Interdisciplinary Women's and Gender Studies".
She was the first woman to be appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth.
From 1993 to 1999 she was a member of the SPD executive committee and deputy chairwoman of the party's policy commission._
#### Political career
_In the 1999 European elections, Schwan was elected to the European Parliament for the SPD, where she was a member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Equal Opportunities and the Committee on Constitutional Affairs.
In 2004 she was the SPD candidate for the office of Federal President, but lost to the incumbent Horst Köhler._
#### President of the Viadrina European University
_In 2009, Schwan was elected President of the Viadrina European University in Frankfurt (Oder).
She is the first woman to hold this office._
_Under her leadership, the Viadrina has become one of the leading universities in Europe for the study of European integration and cross-border cooperation.
She has also established a number of new research centers and programs, including the Center for Applied European Studies and the Viadrina Center for Gender in Science._
#### Other activities
_Schwan is a member of the board of directors of the Körber Foundation and the Robert Bosch Foundation.
She is also a member of the German Council on Foreign Relations and the French-German Future Council._
#### Awards
_Schwan has received numerous awards for her work, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Theodor Heuss Medal, and the Ursula Hirschmann Prize._
