The University is the oldest university in the Low Countries, the largest Flemish University and the oldest Catholic University in Europe. It was founded on December 9, 1425 by Pope Martin V. As a college student himself, he studied philosophy, ancient Hebrew literature, linguistics, and theology. After he earned his doctorate in Ancient Hebrew Literature in 1986, he became a school lecturer. He ultimately earned a professors chair at the Catholic Univeristy at Leuven.
