Belgian educator and school administrator. On May 24, 2005 he was chosen to head the the University of Leuven, otherwise known as the Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium. The University is the oldest university in the Low Countries, the largest Flemish University and the oldest Catholic University in Europe. It was founded on December 9, 1425 by Pope Martin V. As a college student himself, he studied philosophy, ancient Hebrew literature, linguistics, and theology. After he earned his doctorate in Ancient Hebrew Literature in 1986, he became a school lecturer. He ultimately earned a professors chair at the Catholic Univeristy at Leuven. Prior to his appointment as head of the school he was Vice-rector of the University and President for the Humanities and Social Sciences. He participates in research programmes throughout the world and has written a number of articles on biblical topics, including one on the Book of the Exodus in 1997.
