Chandra Darshan venerates Soma, the Moon God, whose myths in the Puranas portray the Moon as a gentle illuminator of the night and a symbol of mind and emotions. Tradition recalls that Soma married the twenty-seven daughters of Daksha, the nakshatras, and that his monthly waxing and waning is celebrated through moonlit darshan as a reminder of time's cyclical rhythm. The January observance, guided by the lunar calendar, invites devotees to seek calm, clarity, and blessings for the month ahead.
Offer fresh flowers, milk, coconut, and a diya to the Moon, chant moon-mantras or bhajans, and observe a light fast from sunset to moonrise.
Regional calendars may mark Chandra Darshan on different days depending on which tithi and nakshatra are used, and some communities observe it after the moonrise muhurat while others follow the next lunar day.
