Ratha Saptami honors Surya, the Sun God, and is observed on the seventh day of the bright half of the Hindu month Magha, when the sun god's chariot is invoked. Legend holds that Surya travels across the heavens in a golden celestial chariot drawn by seven horses, blessing the world with health and vitality. Devotees worship Surya, perform sun salutations, and many places celebrate with temple rituals and symbolic chariot processions to mark this auspicious day.
Surya Puja is performed at sunrise with offerings of flowers, water, fruits and jaggery; many devotees fast (or observe a partial fast) and chant Surya mantras such as Surya Gayatri or Aditya Hrudayam while offering arghya to the Sun.
Ratha Saptami is observed on the seventh day of the bright half, but regional calendars may place the date differently, so celebrations can vary by region. Puja timing is guided by the tithi, nakshatra and an auspicious muhurat, usually in the early morning around sunrise.
