Thai Amavasai is the new moon day in the Tamil month of Thai, traditionally celebrated as a time to remember and honor one’s ancestors. In Tamil and Hindu beliefs, amavasya is thought to be when the spirits of forefathers visit homes to receive offerings, so families light lamps and offer prayers and simple foods as reverence. There is no single deity associated with Thai Amavasai; its significance lies in honoring Pitru Devatas and the cultural tradition of ancestor reverence in Tamil Hindu practice.
A typical Thai Amavasai puja is performed at home or temple with a sankalpa for ancestors, offering fruits, coconut, sesame seeds, flowers, milk, and a lamp, along with tarpan for Pitru; fasting or partial fasting is common, and chanting pitru mantras/slokas is encouraged.
Different regions may observe Thai Amavasai on slightly different days with distinct rituals, because the tithi and nakshatra in each Panchang determine when the new moon is observed and muhurats set the ritual timings.
