Marana Karaka Sthana: The Concept of Planetary Discomfort

Marana Karaka Sthana literally means death signifying house, and thus is a house where a planet cannot perform well so it feels like dying rather contributing to the said responsibilities of the house. This is a common term in Vedic astrology, also known as Maraka Sthan. Basically, the house does not resonate with the fundamental nature of the planet.

Every Planet has their own natural significations and in the same way, each house also has natural significations. There are certain houses where the planets are uncomfortable and unable to function properly due to the conflicting nature of the planets and houses.

Exploring the Effects of Planets in Marana Karaka Sthana

The Sun is the King. It is our soul, a creative planet. But the 12th house is the house of loss and renunciation. It also signifies bed pleasures but the Sun being the protector of Dharma, would go against these significations.

The Moon is the mind and the emotions. It relates to our thoughts, our feelings. Whereas the 8th house is the house of death, occult knowledge, separation etc. The soft and sensitive Moon becomes very uncomfortable in this Scorpionic house of murky waters, change, and transformation.

Mars is a warrior planet, fiery and impulsive. The 7th house is the house of marriage, sex and partnership. So, when an aggressive planet is asked to contribute to love and romance, it becomes uncomfortable. Mars is adamant and uncompromising, which does not bode well for relationships.

Mercury is the planet of information, learning, logic. Like Mars, Mercury feels out of place in the 7th house of intimacy and romance. Also, Mercury is a neuter planet, neither male nor female. And as such, does not have the maturity to understand relationships. And therefore, becomes uncomfortable here.

Jupiter is the planet of wisdom, spirituality, higher knowledge. The 3rd house is one of courage and activity. And thus, Jupiter if asked to become aggressive and fight, would become uncomfortable. Jupiter, being the Devaguru, by nature is a peace-loving planet signifying harmony and universal brotherhood. When Jupiter goes to the 3rd house, the house of battle, it is out of place.

Venus is the planet of love, romance, luxury and relationships. It wants to live a luxurious life. But the 6th house is the house of service, charity, disease etc. So Venus becomes very agitated and uncomfortable here. It fails to give good results, particularly in relationships, and can create a critical, nit-picking nature. Moreover, the 6th house signifies hard work, which is not suited to pleasure and luxury-seeking Venus and hence it goes to the Marana Sthana when placed in the 6th.

Saturn is the significator of death and disease. The 1st house is the house of vitality, physical health, creativity, and overall fortune. Saturn rules Karma, cleans up our past deeds and for Karma cleanup, the 1st house is not an ideal position. Saturn is all about discipline, truth, karmic backlogs etc. so Saturn is very uncomfortable in the 1st house. Similarly, Saturn gets debilitated in the first house Aries, where the fiery Sun gets exalted. Here Sun opposes the lethargy and sluggishness of Saturn.

Rahu is all about materialistic gains. Whereas, the 9th house is the house of dharma and spirituality. And Rahu considered as an immoral force full of desire and obsession, does not feel at home in the house of morality and ethics.

Implications of Planetary Placements in Marana Karaka Sthana

Some of the effects of these placements may include: houses significations would suffer since the owner is not able to care and contribute to its own house; the natural significance of the planet may suffer and become negative or problematic for the native; when a planet is positioned in a house it is uncomfortable, the energy becomes disturbed because the tendency for the planet to continue to behave according to his basic nature.
