Emilio Botín Sanz de Sautuola y García de los Ríos (Santander, 1 October 1934 - Madrid, 9 September 2014) was a Spanish banker who was chairman of Banco Santander from 1986 until his death in 2014.
Botín was born in Santander, Spain, the son of Emilio Botín-Sanz de Sautuola y López and Carmen García de los Ríos y Güemes. He studied law at the University of Deusto in Bilbao and the University of Madrid, and business administration at Harvard Business School.
Botín joined Banco Santander in 1958, and became its chairman in 1986. Under his leadership, Banco Santander became one of the largest banks in the world. Botín was also a member of the board of directors of several other companies, including Telefónica, Repsol, and Iberdrola.
Botín was a controversial figure. He was accused of corruption and tax evasion, and was investigated by Spanish authorities on several occasions. However, he was never convicted of any crime.
Botín died in Madrid on 9 September 2014, at the age of 79. He was succeeded as chairman of Banco Santander by his daughter, Ana Botín.
