In 1993 his bank absorbed Banco Español de Crédito (Banesto), and in 1999 it merged with Banco Central Hispano creating Banco Santander Central Hispano (BSCH), which became Spains largest bank, of which he was co-president with Central Hispanos José María Amusategui, until Amusategui retired in 2002. In 2004, BSCH acquired the British bank Abbey National, making BSCH the second largest bank in Europe by market capitalisation. Botín was born into a wealthy family in Santander, Spain. His father was a lawyer and his mother was the daughter of a banker. Botín studied law at the University of Deusto and then at the Complutense University of Madrid. After graduating from law school, he worked as a lawyer for several years before joining the family bank, Banco Santander, in 1960.
Botín quickly rose through the ranks at Banco Santander, and in 1986 he became the bank's chairman. Under his leadership, Banco Santander grew to become one of the largest banks in the world. Botín was also a prominent figure in Spanish business and politics. He was a member of the board of directors of several companies, including Telefónica and Repsol. He was also a close friend of former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar.
Botín was married to Paloma O'Shea, a concert pianist. They had six children. Botín was a keen golfer and art collector. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Botín died of a heart attack on September 9, 2014 in Madrid, Spain. He was 80 years old.
