Norwegian teacher and sports commentator who worked as a sports commentator at the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation from 1967 to 2011. Magnus Carlsen is a Norwegian chess grandmaster who is the current World Chess Champion. He has held the title since 2013, when he defeated Viswanathan Anand in a match in Chennai, India. Carlsen is also the three-time World Rapid Chess Champion and the five-time World Blitz Chess Champion.
Carlsen was born in Tønsberg, Norway, on November 30, 1990. He learned to play chess at the age of five from his father, Henrik Carlsen. Carlsen quickly showed a talent for the game, and by the age of nine he was playing against adults in local tournaments. In 2004, at the age of 13, Carlsen became the youngest player ever to qualify for the Chess World Cup.
Carlsen continued to rise through the ranks of chess, and in 2010 he became the youngest player ever to reach a rating of 2800. In 2013, he defeated Anand to become the World Chess Champion. Carlsen has since successfully defended his title three times, against Anand in 2014, Sergey Karjakin in 2016, and Fabiano Caruana in 2018.
Carlsen is considered one of the greatest chess players of all time. He is known for his aggressive style of play and his ability to calculate complex variations quickly and accurately. Carlsen is also a successful author and commentator, and he has written several books on chess.
