American editor and publisher, son of John Cowles Sr. (1898–1983). Cowles sat on the boards of directors of the Associated Press and Columbia Universitys Pulitzer Prizes and had been CEO of Cowles Media Company, founded by his grandfather and until 1998 the parent of the Star Tribune newspaper. John Cowles Jr. was a prominent American businessman and politician. He was the publisher of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the president of the Cowles Media Company. He also served as the United States Senator from Minnesota from 1978 to 1984. Cowles was a strong supporter of education and the arts. He served on the board of trustees of Yale University and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. He was also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
