American athlete, pro football player, he won the Heisman trophy in 1961. Considered one of the best college football players at the time, he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in . In his second season he suffered a severe head injury and retired from pro football. Returning to school, he earned a masters degree in sociology and became a youth counselor.
