Robert Froehlke was born on October 15, 1922 in Neenah, Wisconsin. He was a professional basketball player who played for the Oshkosh All-Stars in the National Basketball League (NBL) and the Milwaukee Hawks in the Basketball Association of America (BAA). He was also a member of the United States national basketball team that won a gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics.
Froehlke played college basketball at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He was a two-time All-American and led the Badgers to the 1941 NCAA championship game. He was selected by the Oshkosh All-Stars in the 1942 NBL draft.
Froehlke played for the All-Stars for two seasons before joining the Milwaukee Hawks in 1946. He played for the Hawks for three seasons before retiring in 1949. He averaged 10.6 points per game in his NBL and BAA career.
Froehlke was a member of the United States national basketball team that won a gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He was one of the team's leading scorers, averaging 12.2 points per game.
After his playing career, Froehlke worked as a basketball coach and scout. He was the head coach of the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh from 1950 to 1954. He also worked as a scout for the Milwaukee Bucks from 1968 to 1986.
Froehlke was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1982. He died on January 11, 2010 at the age of 87.
