Born in La Spezia, Giannini began his acting career in the early 1960s, appearing in small roles in films. His breakthrough came in 1970 when he played the title role in Lina Wertmüller's "Swept Away." Giannini won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance. Over the years, Giannini has appeared in over 150 films, both in Italy and internationally. He has worked with some of the most acclaimed directors in film, including Dino Risi, Ettore Scola, and Francis Ford Coppola. Giannini has also won numerous awards for his work, including two David di Donatello Awards and a Silver Bear for Best Actor at the Berlin International Film Festival. In addition to his acting career, Giannini has also directed several films. His first directorial effort was the 1982 film "Terrazza." Since then, he has directed a number of other films, including "The Prizewinner" (1991) and "Bread and Tulips" (2000). Giannini is married to the actress Donatella Damiani.
