Gilbert was a successful racing driver in the 1930s and 1940s. He won the 1946 French Grand Prix and finished on the podium in the 1948 Monaco Grand Prix. Gilbert retired from racing in 1948 after a serious accident.
After retiring from racing, Gilbert became a successful businessman. He founded the Gil Gilbert Engineering company, which manufactured racing cars and engines. Gilbert also served as a technical advisor to the French national racing team.
Gilbert died in 1992 at the age of 78.
