Hagen Ross (born May 21, 1938) is an American journalist and author. He is best known for his work as a reporter for the Washington Post and the New York Times, and for his books on the Vietnam War and the Middle East.
Ross was born in Flagstaff, Arizona, and raised in California. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1960 with a degree in journalism. After graduation, he worked for the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times before joining the Washington Post in 1965.
At the Post, Ross covered the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. He was one of the first reporters to write about the My Lai massacre, and he was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for the Post's Watergate coverage.
In 1976, Ross joined the New York Times, where he covered the Middle East. He was based in Beirut, Lebanon, from 1978 to 1982, and he covered the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982. He also covered the Palestinian uprising in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Ross retired from the Times in 2003. He has since written several books, including Vietnam: A Reporter's War (2006) and The Middle East: A History of Conflict since 1914 (2014).
Ross is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the George Polk Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, and the National Book Award.
