American football end who played in the National Football League (NFL) for the New York Giants (1937–1942, 1946–1947) and later served as the Giants coach (1954-1960). During Howells seven seasons as head coach, he drafted and coached a roster of stars, including six future Pro Football Hall of Famers, Sam Huff, Andy Robustelli, Rosey Brown, Emlen Tunnell, Frank Gifford, and Don Maynard.
