He was the oldest inmate in France before being released on 3 October 2005 after 41 years imprisonment, which is one of the longest detentions in Europe. He was nicknamed Létrangleur (the strangler) because of the signature Létrangleur no 1 (The No. 1 Strangler) located on the bottom of anonymous letters sent to police.
