Sicco Leendert Mansholt was a Dutch politician who served as the President of the European Parliament from 1967 to 1971. He was also a member of the European Commission from 1958 to 1972, and served as its President from 1972 to 1973. Mansholt was a strong advocate for European integration and was instrumental in the development of the Common Agricultural Policy.
Mansholt was born on September 13, 1908, in Ulrum, Netherlands. He studied agriculture at the University of Wageningen and worked as a farmer before entering politics. In 1946, he was elected to the Dutch parliament as a member of the Labour Party. He served as Minister of Agriculture from 1948 to 1958.
In 1958, Mansholt was appointed to the European Commission. He served as the Commissioner for Agriculture from 1958 to 1972, and as the Commissioner for Regional Policy from 1972 to 1973. During his time at the Commission, Mansholt played a key role in the development of the Common Agricultural Policy, which aimed to increase agricultural production and improve the incomes of farmers.
In 1972, Mansholt was elected President of the European Commission. He served in this role until 1973, when he was succeeded by François-Xavier Ortoli. After leaving the Commission, Mansholt founded the Mansholt Foundation, which promotes sustainable agriculture and rural development.
Sicco Leendert Mansholt died on May 29, 1995, in Brussels, Belgium.
