Biography:
Mansholt SiccoLeendert was a Dutch politician who served as the 4th President of the European Commission from 1972 to 1973. He was also the 1st Vice-President of the European Commission from 1958 to 1972 and the 5th European Commissioner for Agriculture from 1958 to 1972.
Sicco Mansholt was born in Ulrum, Netherlands, on September 13, 1908. He studied agriculture at the University of Wageningen and graduated in 1933. After graduating, he worked as a farmer and agricultural advisor.
In 1945, Mansholt was elected to the Dutch parliament as a member of the Labour Party. He served in parliament until 1958, when he was appointed as the European Commissioner for Agriculture.
As European Commissioner for Agriculture, Mansholt was responsible for implementing the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). He was a strong advocate for the CAP and helped to shape its development.
In 1972, Mansholt was elected as the President of the European Commission. He served as President until 1973, when he resigned due to ill health.
After his resignation, Mansholt remained active in public life. He was a member of the Club of Rome and the European Movement. He also served as a special adviser to the Dutch government on agricultural policy.
Sicco Mansholt died in Wassenaar, Netherlands, on May 29, 1995. He was 86 years old.
