Mayer Constance is an American artist and writer. She was born on November 23, 1925, in Forrest City, Arkansas. She is best known for her work in ceramics, particularly her abstract sculptures. She also writes poetry and essays, and has published numerous books and articles.
Constance received her B.A. in art and philosophy from the University of Arkansas in 1947, and her M.F.A. in ceramics from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in 1949. She taught at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee from 1952 to 1993, and was a visiting artist at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1969.
Constance's work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally. She has received numerous awards and honors, including the National Endowment for the Arts Crafts Fellowship in 1984 and the Governor's Award for the Arts in Wisconsin in 1993.
Constance is a member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts and the American Craft Council. She is an avid supporter of the arts and has served on the board of directors of several art organizations, including the Visual Arts Center of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Artists Resource Network.
Constance lives and works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
