He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1942, and from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1945. He then joined the U.S. Army and served in the Medical Corps during World War II. After the war, he worked at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he developed the first successful polio vaccine in 1955.
