Philipe Grard was a French actor who appeared in over 100 films and television shows. He is best known for his roles in the films Casablanca (1942), Citizen Kane (1941), and The Maltese Falcon (1941).
Grard was born in Cannes, France, on December 4, 1922. He began his acting career in the early 1940s, and quickly became one of the most popular actors in France. He starred in a number of French films, including Les Enfants du Paradis (1945) and La Grande Illusion (1937).
In 1942, Grard made his Hollywood debut in the film Casablanca. He played the role of Victor Laszlo, a Czech resistance leader who is trying to escape from Casablanca with his wife, Ilsa Lund (Ingrid Bergman). Grard's performance in the film was praised by critics, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
After Casablanca, Grard continued to appear in a number of Hollywood films, including Citizen Kane (1941), The Maltese Falcon (1941), and To Have and Have Not (1944). He also appeared in a number of television shows, including The Twilight Zone (1959) and Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955).
Grard died in Paris, France, on October 26, 2014, at the age of 91.
