Prescott Hal was born on October 18, 1920, in Abilene, United States. He is a retired army general who is best known for his role as commander of the 24th Infantry Division during the Vietnam War.
Hal graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1942 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the infantry. He served in the European Theater during World War II and was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Purple Heart. After the war, he served in various staff and command positions before being assigned to command the 24th Infantry Division in Vietnam in 1968.
Under Hal's leadership, the 24th Infantry Division played a key role in the Tet Offensive. The division successfully defended its positions against heavy enemy attacks and helped to turn the tide of the battle. Hal was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the Tet Offensive.
After the war, Hal served as commander of the Eighth United States Army in Korea and as deputy commander of the United States Army in Europe. He retired from the army in 1978 and went on to serve as a business executive and author. He is the author of several books, including From West Point to Vietnam: A Soldier's Journey and My Time in War: Vietnam, 1968-1969.
Hal is married and has three children. He lives in the Washington, D.C., area.
