American author, editor, journalist, essayist and compiler of anthologies. A prolific writer of non-fiction and fiction, he published over 40 works. The editor of "The Advocate" and a gay rights activist, he founded the first Gay & Lesbian center in the United States, and was president of the board of directors of "The AIDS Project".
