Richter Les is an American seismologist who developed the Richter scale, a measure of the strength of earthquakes.
He was born in Fresno, California, on October 6, 1930.
He received his B.S. degree in physics from the California Institute of Technology in 1952 and his Ph.D. degree in geophysics from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1958.
He worked at the California Institute of Technology from 1958 to 1987, and at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1987 to 1995.
He retired in 1995.
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He has received the National Medal of Science and the Crafoord Prize.
