Peruvian lawyer and defender of human rights, she promoted womens right to live free of violence. She worked in defence of the rights of indigenous women who were subjected to forced sterilization in Peru. For carrying out this work, she was the victim of death threats from the terrorist group Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso) and forced into exile in Spain in 2000, where she headed the Research and Policy Department of Amnesty International. Her extensive experience in the defence of womens rights led her to becoming an advisor to the Minister of Justice of Peru and work in various organizations including the Centro de la Mujer Peruana Flora Tristán (Flora Tristán Peruvian Womens Centre) which she joined in 1984.
