Biography:
Jean M. Auel is an American author best known for her series of historical fiction novels set in prehistoric Europe, beginning with "The Clan of the Cave Bear" (1980). Her work has been praised for its vivid depictions of Stone Age life and its strong female characters.
Auel was born in Whangarei, New Zealand, on October 28, 1933. She later moved to the United States and worked as a secretary, accountant, and financial manager before deciding to pursue a career in writing. In 1977, she began writing "The Clan of the Cave Bear," which was published three years later and became a bestseller. The novel inspired a miniseries and a series of sequels, including "The Valley of Horses" (1982), "The Mammoth Hunters" (1985), "The Plains of Passage" (1990), and "The Shelters of Stone" (2002).
Auel's work has been translated into more than 30 languages and has sold over 45 million copies worldwide. She has received numerous awards, including the Audie Award for Best Audiobook and the Golden Quill Award for Historical Fiction. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
In addition to her writing career, Auel is a dedicated environmentalist and animal welfare advocate. She has worked with various organizations to protect wolves and educate the public about the importance of preserving wildlife.
