American garment district fire at the Triangle Waist Co manufacturing shop situated at 23 Washington Place, New York City. "Three stories of a ten floor building at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place were burned yesterday. While the fire was going on 141 young men and women, at least 125 of them mere girls were burned to death or killed by jumping to the pavement below. "The fire was practically over in half an hour and was concentrated on the eighth, ninth and tenth floors. The victims were mostly girls from 18 to 28 years of age. They were employed by the Triangle Shirtwaist company whose principal owners are Isaac Harris and Max Blanck. Most of them could barely speak English. Many of them came from Brooklyn and also most were the main support of their families. Mssrs. Harris and Blanck were in the building, but they escaped. They carried with them Mr. Blancks children and governess and fled over the roofs. Their employees did not know that way out of the building. The coroner declared the building laws were not enforced.
