Blair Bill is a retired American politician who served as the 63rd governor of Kentucky from 1983 to 1991. A member of the Democratic Party, he was the first Kentuckian to be born in the 20th century to hold the office.
Bill was born on May 25, 1942, in Hazard, Kentucky. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1964 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1967. After serving as a law clerk for a federal judge, Bill returned to Kentucky and began his political career.
Bill was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1972 and served until 1980, when he was elected to the Kentucky Senate. In 1983, he was elected governor, defeating Republican candidate Jim Bunning. Bill was re-elected in 1987, and he left office in 1991.
During his tenure as governor, Bill focused on education, economic development, and healthcare. He also signed into law a number of environmental protection measures. After leaving office, Bill remained active in public life. He served as a professor at the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, and he also worked as a consultant for various organizations.
Bill is married to Phyllis George, a former Miss America. They have three children.
