Dutch biologist, opinion maker and author of some fifty fiction and childrens books. He studied biology in Amsterdam, but soon became disappointed in modern science. It seemed more like a "survival of the fittest" game of collecting the best, seemingly fitting arguments, than a genuine search for personal truth. So he became a writer, he explained to newspaper Trouw. As a scholarly writer, he could write about what really seemed important to him. But the writing about what seemed honest to himself never came easy. At age 18, he adopted the name Midas, adopted from Midas the Wolf in the Dutch Donald Duck. He often took the role of the enfant terrible in the public debate. He agitated towards modernistic trends like health culture and vegetarianism. See the Midas Dekkers - Wikiquote. His funny quote "Sigaren roken is ademen voor gevorderden" (Cigar smoking is breathing for adults), was like similar quotes of Freud ("Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar") and other happy smokers adopted by the tobacco industry. He became fascinated by the evolution theory of Charles Darwin and the "Anthropogenie" of the philosopher Ernst Haeckel. As a biologist, he became interested in the Wolf within aspects of human behaviour (VW), or "homo homini lupus" as the ancients before Descartes said. Link to German Wikipedia Read less
