Dumas began her career in the early 1980s, appearing in small roles in films and television series. She gained recognition for her performance in the 1985 film 37°2 le matin, for which she won the César Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Dumas has since starred in a number of films, including The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2007), Amélie (2001), and The Artist (2011). She has also directed and written several films, including La Vie est belle (1997) and Le Pharmacien de garde (2003).
