American record producer, singer, impresario, songwriter, musician, film maker, and radio actor. He is best known for his role behind a string of novelty and cult pop rock singles in the 1960s, and for managing The Runaways in the 1970s. He has been described as "one of the most colorful characters in the annals of rock & roll" and as "a shadowy cult figure well outside the margins of the mainstream." He says in a 2012 interview that he was once married for 68 days, and that he has about 12 children, of which he has met one or two. About the secret of his success he said in the same interview: " I’m not Jewish. I’m not in the mafia. I’m not English. I’m not from the south. I’m not gay. I’m not pretty. I’m not nice. I’m not smart. I’m not talented. So how in the hell have I been able to sell 102 million records in 53 years? The answer? I put my stuff in the holes of pop culture. What I do may not always be a home run but it will be a hit. I listen to my audience and I give them what my competition forgets to give them." He had bladder cancer surgery in February 2012, more surgery in May 2013, and he died of bladder cancer in Hollywood, California on 15 January 2015 at the age of 75.
