French physicist who did his most important work on the theory of magnetic materials, originally in Strasburg. In 1940 he moved to Grenoble and became the driving force in making Grenoble one of the most important scientific centers in France. Neel won the Nobel Prize in 1970 for his concept of a special type of magnetic material called "antiferromagnet", confirmed by experiments in 1949.
