She graduated from Institut d’études politiques in Straßburg in 1988 and from Centre de formation des journalistes at Rue du Louvre in Paris in 1990. 1991 she started her journalistic career as correspondent of the French paper Libération and the British BBC in Czechoslovalia and later in the Caucasus. For Le Monde she went first to Ukraine and Russia. On 1 March 2013 she was elected by the journalists of Le Monde as new director, and confirmed by the board of owners on 6 March 2013.
