French engineer who began his scientific career at the Atomic Energy Commission, then as director of research at CNRS. He was successively President of the CNES scientific program committee, chairman of the board of the CNRS, and CNES President, before becoming High Commissioner for Atomic Energy in 1998 and Delegate for Nuclear Safety in 2001.
