Italian surgeon, gynaecologist and pioneering biologist, who announced in 1961 that he had allowed a human egg fertilised with human semen to grow outside the womb in a laboratory for 29 days, gaining him international media attention and denouncement from the Catholic Church. His claim was never verified. He died in Bologna of a heart attack on 14 October 1973, aged 51.
