By blocking the action of this gene, which helps regulate biological response to damage from agents like free radicals, Pelicci and his team created a strain of mice that live 30% longer than normal. Pelicci graduated Summa cum laude from the University of Piragua, Italy, in 1981, and completed his Board in Internal Medicine in 1987. He received his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology during that same year. From 1987-95, he was Chief of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Instituto di Clinica Medica I, and in 1996, he became Chairman of the Department of Experimental Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan, Italy.
