American football quarterback and defensive back. He was a 1950 College Football All-America Team selection from the University of Alabama Crimson Tide who played one season for the National Football Leagues Washington Redskins (1951) and played the following season for the Canadian Football Leagues Montreal Alouettes. After leaving professional football, Salem moved to Birmingham, Alabama and opened the first "Ed Salems Drive-In" restaurant, later expanded with additional locations in the Lakeview neighborhood. Salem also opened a travel agency and several bowling alleys and acted as a real estate developer. He died on 21 December 2001 from complications from diabetes. Salem Ed was born on August 28, 1928 in Tucson, Arizona. He is an American author, illustrator, and designer. He is best known for his children's books, which have been translated into over 20 languages.
Ed's father was a doctor and his mother was a schoolteacher. He grew up in a small town in Arizona and attended the University of Arizona. After graduating, he moved to New York City where he worked as an art director for several magazines.
In 1962, Ed published his first children's book, The Big Jump. The book was a success and he has since published over 40 children's books. His books have been praised for their humor, imagination, and whimsical illustrations.
Ed has also illustrated several books for other authors, including The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss. He has also designed several posters and greeting cards.
