American scientist, assigned to undersea warfare studies during WW II. He obtained his Ph.D. in 1938 and worked on the Yale faculty 1939-1942. In 1947 he taught at Princeton as Head of the Astronomy Dept. In 1952 he was elected to the National Academy of Science. He was the director of Project Matterhorn 1953-1961.
