American author, critic, biographer, playwright, stage director, and librettist. He was the drama critic of The Wall Street Journal, the critic-at-large of Commentary, and the author of "Sightings," a column about the arts in America that appeared biweekly in The Wall Street Journal. He blogged at About Last Night and wrote about the arts for many other magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times and National Review. He was a regular panelist on Three on the Aisle, a bimonthly podcast about theater in America that was hosted by American Theatre magazine. Teachout Terry was born on February 6, 1956, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She is a lawyer, professor, and politician who is best known for her work on campaign finance reform and for her unsuccessful run for governor of New York in 2014.
Teachout graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After graduating from law school, she clerked for Judge Guido Calabresi on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She then worked as a staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights, where she represented victims of human rights abuses.
In 2000, Teachout joined the faculty of Fordham University School of Law. She teaches courses on constitutional law, campaign finance law, and legal ethics. She is also the author of several books on campaign finance reform, including The Capture of the Court: How the Supreme Court Became a Tool of the Right and Citizens United: The Triumph of Special Interests.
In 2014, Teachout ran for governor of New York on the Working Families Party ticket. She lost the primary to Andrew Cuomo, but she received a significant number of votes. Teachout's campaign was notable for its focus on progressive issues, such as campaign finance reform, affordable housing, and a $15 minimum wage.
Teachout continues to be active in politics and public policy. She is a member of the board of directors of the Center for Constitutional Rights and the New York Civil Liberties Union. She also writes frequently on campaign finance reform and other progressive issues.
