Herman van Wissen (1910-1983)

Herman van Wissen was a Dutch landscape and architectural painter.

Biography

Van Wissen was born on 27 December 1910 in Groningen. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, from 1930 to 1935. After graduating, he travelled to Italy, France and Spain, where he was influenced by the work of the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists.

Van Wissen returned to the Netherlands in 1937 and settled in Amsterdam. He became a member of the Vereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars Lare-Blaricum, a group of artists who lived and worked in the village of Laren.

Van Wissen's work was influenced by the Dutch landscape and the architecture of old Dutch towns. He painted atmospheric scenes of canals, bridges, windmills and other rural subjects. He also painted portraits and still lifes.

Van Wissen's work was exhibited in many galleries and museums in the Netherlands and abroad. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1947 and the Rembrandt Prize in 1954.

Van Wissen died on 17 January 1983 in Amsterdam.
