American ecclesiastic; Bishop Wuerl of Pittsburgh upholds the beliefs and principles of the Catholic Church but decried its secrecy during the sex abuse scandals of the early 2000s, and called for more openness and involvement of laypeople. In 1993, Wuerl confronted the Vatican by refusing to reinstate a priest whom Wuerl had removed after the priest was accused of molesting a teenage boy. Two years later, the Vatican reversed itself, and Wuerl has continued to remove abusive priests since then. He has served as bishop in Seattle and Pittsburgh, has studied and worked in Rome, is author of several books, and appears in a nationally syndicated television program, "The Teaching of Christ." In addition, he is a professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. Considered a leading conservative voice in the Catholic Church, he was named Archbishop of Washington, D.C. by Pope Benedict XVI on May 16, 2006.
