French actor, who earned a bachelor of philosophy at the Paris Conservatoire, where he met Michel Piccoli, who remained a friend until his death. Chaumette made his film debut in 1942 in "Les Visiteurs du soir" by Marcel Carné. He became known for his roles in historical dramas on television. He dubbed the voices of three emblematic figures of "evil" in cinema science fiction: the intelligent computer HAL 9000 in "2001: A Space Odyssey," Darth Vader in the first episode of the "Star Wars" saga (1977) and Khan Noonien Singh in "Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan."
