Adolf Hugo Dietzel was a German composer, pianist, and music educator.
Dietzel was born in Pforzheim, Germany on February 3, 1902. He studied music with Philipp Jarnach and Ernst Toch, and later with Arnold Schoenberg. Dietzel was a member of the Novembergruppe, a group of artists and intellectuals who were critical of the Weimar Republic. In 1933, Dietzel was forced to leave Germany due to his opposition to the Nazi regime. He settled in Switzerland, where he taught at the Zurich Conservatory of Music.
Dietzel's music is often characterized by its use of atonality and Expressionism. He wrote a number of works for piano, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. Dietzel also wrote several operas, including Die Geschichte vom Soldaten (1928) and Der Prozess (1952).
Dietzel died in Zurich, Switzerland on March 13, 1988.
