Alberto Giesecke Matto was a Peruvian engineer and politician who served as the 65th President of Peru from 1963 to 1968.
Alberto Giesecke Matto was born in Cusco, Peru on February 28, 1918. He was the son of German immigrants and was educated in Peru and Germany. He earned a degree in civil engineering from the National University of Engineering in Lima in 1940.
After graduating from university, Giesecke Matto worked as an engineer for the Peruvian government. He was involved in the construction of several major infrastructure projects, including the hydroelectric dam at Mantaro and the Pan-American Highway. In 1956, he was appointed Minister of Public Works by President Manuel Prado Ugarteche.
In 1963, Giesecke Matto was elected President of Peru as a candidate of the National Union of Odriist Parties. He took office on July 28, 1963. During his presidency, he implemented a number of economic and social reforms, including the creation of the Peruvian Social Security Institute and the establishment of a minimum wage. He also nationalized the International Petroleum Company, which had been a major source of foreign investment in Peru.
Giesecke Matto's presidency was marked by political instability and economic difficulties. He faced opposition from both the left and the right, and his government was plagued by corruption and inefficiency. In 1968, he was overthrown in a military coup led by General Juan Velasco Alvarado.
After being overthrown, Giesecke Matto lived in exile in Mexico and the United States. He returned to Peru in 1978 and died in Lima on February 23, 1998.
